Learning To Drive In Peterborough

If you haven't already done so you will need to obtain your UK provisional licence. Application forms for this are available from your local Post Office.

You will also require a Passport type photograph along with your passport or birth certificate. Guidance notes are found in with the application pack.

Once you have received your licence keep both the photo card and paper part safe.
Your Instructor will need to see it and you will need to present it before you take your Theory and Driving Test.

In order to gain your full driving licence you will have to complete the Driving Test. This is a two step process, with both a practical and a theory test.

Step 1 - The Theory

This test is computer based. The test is in two parts, multiple choice questions first, then a hazard perception test. Both of these tests must be passed at the same time in order to obtain a pass. The first part of the test consists of 50 multiple choice questions. You get an hour to complete this test, which is plenty of time you should even have time to go back and check any questions you weren't to sure on. The pass mark is 43. The second part is the hazard perception. This test involves candidates responding to 15 moving hazards presented during 14 one minute video clips. Candidates are required to score at least 44 points out of a possible 75 in order to pass.

Step 2 - The Practical Test

This driving test lasts for about 35-40 minutes and takes place on routes designed to test you on different aspects of your driving. The test starts with the examiner checking your driving licence and eyesight test followed by 2 'show me/tell me vehicle safety questions being asked by the examiner. Then into the vehicle for your practical driving test. This will include 1 exercise which will require you to manoeuvre the vehicle using reverse gear and maybe an emergency stop exercise. Also during the test you will need to show that you are able to drive independantly, this will last approximately 8-10 minutes. You will drive part of the route either by following road signs or a diagram produced by the examiner. When you return to the test centre at the end of your test, the examiner will give you the result. If you have been successful the examiner will take your provisional off you and send it away on your behalf. If unfortunately you do not pass, the examiner will give you brief explanation on what you failed on and the main points which require more practice.
